Few NFL coaches have been around the league as long as Mike McCarthy of the Dallas Cowboys — with the 59-year-old Pennsylvania native entering his 17th year in the league. With a 155-97-2 (.614) record with the Green Bay Packers and Cowboys to go with 11 playoff victories and a Super Bowl victory, McCarthy is among the most accomplished coaches in the league.
Unsurprisingly, that success has been especially prevalent in September, when McCarthy has posted a 34-19-1 (.639) winning percentage.
With kickoff just days away, BetTexas.com utilized data from Pro-Football-Reference.com to see which coaches get off to a hot start and have the best winning percentage in the month of September. Coaches must have at least three years as a head coach to qualify for this list.
There is no legal Texas sports betting. It will be 2025 before the state legislature again considers wagering.
NFL Coaches in September
The Cowboys Super Bowl odds are among the best in the NFL. Dallas is +1500 to win the title, good for sixth in the league.
Where McCarthy Ranks Among NFL Coaches
Leaguewide, McCarthy’s .639 winning percentage ranks seventh out of those that have coached at least three full seasons in the league. McCarthy found himself sandwiched between Mike Vrabel of Tennessee (11-6, .647) and Kansas City coach Andy Reid (51-29, .638).
Leaguewide, L.A. Rams’ coach Sean McVay has the best September record at 16-4 (.800), while Matt LaFleur of Green Bay (10-3, .769), Kevin Stefanski of Cleveland (6-3, .666) and Baltimore Ravens’ longtime leader John Harbaugh (33-17, .666) have the best winning percentages during the first calendar month.
Conversely, New Orleans coach Dennis Allen ranks at the bottom of the league’s September standings at 3-12 (.200).
Texans coach DeMeco Ryans is in his first hear, but soon hopes to join the leaders on this list. Oddsmakers aren’t convinced of a quick turnaround, though. The Texans Super Bowl odds are tied with Arizona for the worst in the NFL at +20000.
