State Big 12 Coaches Not Doing Good Job of Winning in October

State Big 12 Coaches Not Doing Good Job of Winning in October
Fact Checked by Michael Peters

Few states have experienced the level of success in college football over the years Texas has, and one key to that success is winning in October.

Unfortunately, Texas members of the Big 12 have struggled of late in the second full month of the college football season. As we get into the heart of the season, BetTexas.com utilized records from Sports-Reference.com to see which Big 12 coaches have the best record in the month of October. Coaches must have a minimum three years experience to qualify.

There are no legal Texas sportsbooks to use during the college football season. It will be 2025 before the Texas Legislature takes up wagering again.

Must be 18+ to participate. T&Cs Apply.

Although there are no Texas online casinos or betting apps, national operators list Texas as the state team with the best national title odds at +900. That’s good for a tie with Ohio State for fourth overall. Georgia is still the title favorite at +225, followed by Michigan at +400.

Holgorsen Typically a Big Winner in October

The top Texas Big 12 coach in October is the state’s newest Big 12 coach — Houston’s Dana Holgorsen — who has gone 25-18 at West Virginia and Houston to take the top spot among conference coaches in the state.

Even though Holgorsen and company look likely to take their share of lumps making the transition from the American Athletic Conference, the veteran college coach should still maintain his standing thanks to TCU’s Sonny Dykes falling off after last year’s College Football Playoff run and the potential struggles of Baylor this year under Dave Aranda (5-6 in October).

Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire went 1-3 in 2022. He will lead the Red Raiders into a trio of conference games this October against unranked foes. McGuire and the Red Raiders play Baylor and BYU on the road on Oct. 7 and Oct. 21, sandwiched around a home game with Kansas State on Oct. 14. TCU plays three October games as well — facing Iowa State and K-State on the road on Oct. 7 and Oct. 21, with a home game against BYU on Oct. 14.

Texas’ Steve Sarkisian guides the No. 3 Longhorns into October showdowns with Oklahoma in the Red River Shootout in Dallas on Oct. 7, followed by a road clash with Houston on Oct. 21 and a home game against BYU a week later. Before starting the month, the Longhorns face 4-0 Kansas this week. Aranda and Baylor play Texas Tech and Iowa State at home on Oct. 7 and Oct. 28, with a road game against Cincinnati in between, while Houston plays West Virginia and No. 3 Texas at home on Oct. 12 and Oct. 21, followed by a road game against K-State on Oct. 28.

Of the Lone Star State’s Big 12 members, Texas has the best Big 12 title odds per Caesars Sportsbook — there is no Caesars Texas — at -130, followed by TCU (+2000), Texas Tech (+6000), Baylor (+15000) and Houston (+25000).
