NFL MVP Race: Will Dak Prescott Remain Favorite?

NFL MVP Race: Will Dak Prescott Remain Favorite?
Fact Checked by Nate Hamilton

With another outstanding performance on the nationally televised Sunday Night Football Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott has become the favorite for the NFL MVP Award, according to the odds at BetMGM. His performance raised the confidence in the Cowboys Super Bowl odds for many.

In a 33-13 win over NFC East rival Philadelphia, Prescott threw for 271 yards and two touchdowns.  The game was billed as a duel between Prescott and Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts – the two have been neck-and-neck in the MVP odds for much of the season – but Prescott clearly pulled away in that race as the Cowboys are now tied with Philadelphia at 10-3 overall but had the edge for the division lead at the moment.

Although there isn't currently a BetMGM sportsbook in Texas, nationally, Prescott’s odds at BetMGM are +150. Through 13 games so far, he has 3,505 passing yards, 28 TD passes, and just six interceptions.

Other NFL MVP Race Candidates

Other NFL MVP race candidates could step into the lead at any moment. Close behind in the odds ranking is San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy at +175. Purdy’s stat line is 3,553 yards, 25 TDs, and seven interceptions.

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, whose team leads the AFC North, is +600, and Hurts, on a downward trajectory after back-to-back blowout losses to the 49ers and Cowboys, is +800.

Buffalo QB Josh Allen has played brilliantly at times this season but his chances of winning the league MVP hinge on whether the Bills, who are just 7-6, can rally over the last month of the regular season to make the playoffs. Allen’s odds are +1400.

Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Miami QB Tua Tagovailoa are both at +1600. Mahomes was an early-season favorite in the MVP odds to continue his outstanding play when the Chiefs won the Super Bowl but, while they still leading the AFC West, the Chiefs have not been dominant of late and some of Mahomes’ magic has not been as consistently evident. Tagovailoa started the season extremely hot. Lately, he has certainly been good, just not MVP-level spectacular. At the same time, the Dolphins have cooled (3-2 in their last five games) and they just lost a Monday Night game to underdog Tennessee.

Can a Non-Quarterback Win MVP This Year?

The non-quarterback with the lowest odds is Miami wide receiver Tyreek Hill at +1600 and much further behind is San Francisco running back Christian McCaffrey at +4000.

At BetMGM, 5.1% of the handle for MVP betting is on Prescott, and 10.7% of the handle is on is on Purdy. Early wagers on Purdy would be especially big winners. He started at odds of +2500 to win the MVP.
