Could Texas, Baylor Be Next Netflix Sports Documentary Subject?
Fact Checked by Michael Peters

There’s no denying the Lone Star State has produced some of the most captivating on-field subject material across the college football landscape in recent years.

Between the rise and subsequent turmoil surrounding the Texas Longhorns’ program under former coaches Mack Brown and Tom Herman, as well as current coach Steve Sarkisian — there’s no shortage of subjects that the streaming giant Netflix could focus on in Austin.

Down the road in Waco, there’s another possible subject arc, in the Baylor Bears’ football program — which rebuilt from a sexual assault scandal that ultimately toppled former coach Art Briles to return to championship contention under the tutelage of Matt Rhule and Dave Aranda.

Following Netflix’s recent documentaries on Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel and his Johnny Football persona and the 2005-2009 Florida Gators, BetTexas.com constructed hypothetical odds on what the next major documentary to come out will cover.

Unfortunately, as the college football season kicks off, there are no legal Texas sportsbooks. It will be at least 2025 before the legislature again considers wagering.

Texas Faces Alabama on Saturday

Texas and Baylor football both feature similar levels of highs and lows to the Florida Gators teams the service covered recently, while also presenting a redemption angle sports documentaries love to feature.

Between the Longhorns’ championship team in 2005, the BCS runners-up in 2009 and the ballyhooed but ultimately championship-free teams that took the field in Austin between 2010 and 2022, there’s no shortage of UT angles Netflix could choose from.

Over in Waco, the focus would be more serious, with Briles’ meteoric highs clashing with the disgrace that came from Baylor’s off-the-field scandals.

The allure of both programs is among the reasons why we give Baylor +600 odds of getting a Netflix series, while UT comes in at +850 to land a documentary.

Overall, the leaders on the BetTexas.com documentary leaderboard are Cam Newton’s scandal-clad collegiate campaign (+400), the rise of UCF’s football team under coach Scott Frost (+450) and the Baylor Bears’ football program at +600.

Texas has a chance to make national waves this weekend when it travels to Alabama. BetMGM Sportsbook — there is no BetMGM Texas promo code — sees Texas as the state’s best chance at a national championship with +2500 odds. Georgia is the favorite to win its third straight title at +230, while Alabama is second at +600.

The Crimson Tide are 7-point favorites over the Longhorns on Saturday.
