Compared to last month, we've seen the Mavericks go from favorites to win the Southwest Division at -115 to slight underdogs after being passed by the New Orleans Pelicans. Those odds have lengthened as recently as two weeks ago when FanDuel had them listed at +125. Despite the negative odds movement for Dallas, they sit just 1.5 games behind the Pelicans as of February 7.
The Mavs' season win total has jumped up by two full games in the past two weeks, but the over at 47.5 is currently priced at +112 whereas the under is -140. In other Mavs' odds movement, betting markets seem to indicate that if Dallas wants to make the postseason, they are going to have to do so through the play-in tournament.
2023 Mavericks Team Projections
As polarizing as Kyrie Irving is, he is a dominant player when his head is on straight, and one of the more clutch performers we have seen over the past decade. Having him and Doncic together for an entire season will allow them more time to figure out how to play best off each other, and that is sometimes the key to taking the next step when placing two superstars alongside each other. The Mavs owe other teams three first-round picks and seven second-round picks between now and 2030, which could hamper their ability to acquire a better-than-decent player at the trade deadline.

The sale of the franchise has been the biggest piece of off-the-court news, with Cuban selling to the Adelson and Dumont families, who made their fortunes with the Sands Casino corporation. The sale is expected to close on Dec. 20 for somewhere between $3.5 and $3.8 billion.

Doncic is a perennial Most Valuable Player contender who would be considered the best European player in the NBA if not for the presence of Denver's Nikola Jokic or Milwaukee's Giannis Antetokounmpo, who combined have won four of the last five MVP awards. Still, Doncic is third in the league in scoring at 32.0 points per game, and Irving was averaging 23.0 points before he was injured. With Tim Hardaway providing consistent scoring off the bench and Dereck Lively having a couple of monster games as the rookie starting center, the Mavs have shown marked improvement from last season and could conceivably finish atop the West if the Timberwolves or Thunder (who nobody predicted would hold the top two spots in the West) slide back in the standings.

Texas sportsbooks have yet to be legalized, meaning fans who really want to put some money down on the Mavs would have to travel outside of the state to places like Louisiana, Arkansas, or even across the border to Mexico. It also could have an impact on individual player awards, including Doncic for MVP and Tim Hardaway for the Sixth Man award.

With no games remaining against the Pelicans, the Suns are the next closest team in terms of Western Conference standings. As of February 7, the Mavs trail Phoenix by two games and will need to come away with a victory if they want to make up ground and avoid the play-in tournament.
March 1 at Boston Celtics, 7:30 p.m., ESPN
Speaking of measuring stick games, the Celtics have been on an absolute roll all season long and have positioned themselves as not only Eastern Conference favorites but NBA Finals favorites.
