Next Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Odds: Brian Schottenheimer Replaces McCarthy

Fact Checked by Nate Hamilton

The Dallas Cowboys sent shockwaves across the NFL after the regular season, with the team failing to reach an extension with head coach Mike McCarthy, officially opening the door for a new leader in 2025.

McCarthy’s time in Dallas ended on a sour note, with the Cowboys going 7-10 and missing the playoffs for the first time since 2020, though he did finish his time in Dallas with a 49-35 (.583) record, with a 1-3 mark in the postseason.

The question surrounding the Cowboys was who owner Jerry Jones would go with to be his next head coach, with a host of current NFL assistants in the mix, along with longshots like former Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll and former Cowboy Deion Sanders.

In the end, Jones surprisingly tapped internal candidate Brian Schottenheimer - previously McCarthy's OC - for the big job.

Our Texas sports betting experts prior to the hire broke down some hypothetical odds on which candidate would replace McCarthy as the Cowboys next head coach.

Schottenheimer Replaces McCarthy in Dallas

Our top pick to be the next head coach in Big-D was McCarthy's former offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who despite not garnering other head coach interest across the league had two significant interviews with Jerry Jones in as many days. Outlets such as ProFootballTalk then reported a deal was imminent, which surprised many Cowboys fans. While Schottenheimer has been a long-respected coordinator in the NFL and at the college level, Cowboys fans would've much preferred bold-faced names like Mike Vrabel, Ben Johnson or Bill Belichick.

Expect a lukewarm reception from Dallas fans.

Current Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator and former Cowboys’ OC and quarterbacks coach Kellen Moore checkedin at +275 after spending this year in the same role with the Cowboys’ NFC East rivals.

Moore’s time in Dallas ran from 2018, when he coached Dak Prescott and Dallas’ quarterbacks to 2022, when he parted ways with the franchise after a playoff exit, moving on to the Los Angeles Chargers and then the Eagles. He'll coach for a Super Bowl ring in two weeks against the Kansas City Chiefs.
