The opening weekend of the 2024 college football season got off to a rip-roaring start for the Texas Longhorns, who pulled off a 52-0 home shellacking over Colorado State on Saturday afternoon.
In that 52-point rout, third year starting quarterback Quinn Ewers wound up with 260 yards and three touchdowns on 20/27 passing, while junior wideout Isaiah Bond grabbed five catches for 61 yards and a score to help pace UT’s offense.
Both Ewers and Bond are counted on to guide Texas to new heights this fall as the Longhorns navigate the SEC and possess the third best title odds (alongside Oregon) at +750 on DraftKings Sportsbook. If only there was legalized Texas sports betting to get in on the action.
BetTexas.com wanted to see what QB/WR duos are planning to dominate this season. Using Sports-Football-Reference.com, we found the win-loss percentage of each duo’s current team, the passing completions, receiving yards per reception, and passing yards from the last season. Using a scoring system factoring in that data, we ranked the top 10 CFB duos to lookout for this season.
Rank | Duo | Team | Total Score |
1 | Carson Beck/Dominic Lovett | Georgia | 30 |
2 | Quinn Ewers/ Isaiah Bond | Texas | 28 |
3 | Dillon Gabriel/Tez Johnson | Oregon | 27 |
4 | Cameron Ward/Xavier Restrepo | Miami (FL) | 25 |
5 | Jaxson Dart/Tre Harris | Ole Miss | 23 |
6 | Brady Cook/Luther Burden | Missouri | 22 |
7 | Noah Fifita/Tetairoa McMillan | Arizona | 18 |
T8 | Shedeur Sanders/Travis Hunter | Colorado | 15 |
T8 | Garrett Nussmeier/Kyren Lacy | LSU | 15 |
10 | Will Howard/Emeka Egbuka | Ohio State | 11 |
When it comes to the metrics above, UT’s QB-WR duo have the second best numbers nationally, with a total score of 28, ranking behind Georgia’s Carson Beck and Dominic Lovett, who had 30 points.
Both UT starters will factor in big time when it comes to the Longhorns’ Saturday matinee at 11 a.m. local time against the Michigan Wolverines, which should bolster UT’s chances in that contest.
At the moment, oddsmakers from DraftKings Sportsbook list Texas as a 7.5-point road favorite over 10th ranked Michigan, with a -270 moneyline for Ewers and company, compared to +220 for the hometown Wolverines. Expect DraftKings Sportsbook Texas to be a major player in the Lone Star betting scene once legislation moves forward.
While no one from Ann Arbor made the cut on the QB-WR duo list, the Longhorns will face off against Beck and Lovett in Austin on Oct. 19, setting the stage for what should be a top-notch contest when the two sides meet inside DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium next month.
